i have been wanting to do a save vs. splurge post for both little girls and women for quite some time. there are a lot of factors that go into purchasing a save versus a splurge item. for the girls i take into account whether it's something that will be passed down, how trendy it is, where they'll be wearing it, how seasonally appropriate it is, etc. when it comes to an item for me, i like to splurge on those items that will remain timeless, season after season- a great winter coat, a sweater, or the ultimate pair of jeans. more trendy items are easy to pick up in the save category. i loved finding and matching the save to the splurge and had a hard time narrowing down my picks! hope you enjoy!
target chambray top vs. j. crew chambray top
if you ask me, a chambray top should be in every woman's closet. this j. crew chambray top has been a staple in my wardrobe season after season at every level of dress. in fact, i have worn it so much i recently pulled it out of the wash and discovered a hole under the arm. while perusing the target website i came across this mossimo one- i am super impressed! the fabric is actually a little bit thicker (the j. crew is paper thin) making me think it'd be a perfect layer for winter!
topshop faux leather leggings vs. paige denim faux leather leggings
i don't think it gets much more chic than a pair of leather leggings. paired with a chunky sweater, a graphic tee and a blazer, converse or boots, i don't think you can go wrong! these paige denim leggings look so sleek on, but they're a little pricey for being faux leather. i found these topshop leggings and am pretty convinced i've found a winner! i love that they're high waisted!
free people abbey road sunglasses vs. karen walker super duper sunglasses
i am a big sunglass fan- i don't go anywhere with them. i still don't understand how people can drive without them on! i have lost a nice pair of sunglasses a time or two and it is awful! it's tough to keep track of them in and out of stores, at the park or even around our house. i am in love with the karen walker super duper glasses, i think they're fun, trendy and a perfect accessory. i did a double take when i found the abbey road sunglasses on the free people website- they are $18 and come in a whole bunch of colors. i'd like a pair or two to keep in my purse, car or around the house to grab and go!
collection b crossbody vs. rebecca minkoff sunny satchel
i have been searching for a smaller crossbody purse for awhile now. i am at the point where i can go out without a large bag filled with baby items and am ready for a lighter, easier purse. i am loving anything by rebecca minkoff. her styles are edgy with just the right amount of hardware. i found this brass plum bag from nordstrom and love the studs and the size!
forever 21 faux leather sleeve utility jacket vs. current elliott jacket
this current elliott jacket is amazing in person, i have been eyeing it since for a couple months. the waxed ombre sleeves are great. i am loving the utility jacket trend- you can dress it up or down and it's great for layering all through the winter. plus, they look darling with any shade of scarf. the forever 21 jacket has the added stud detail and a faux leather sleeve- it couldn't be cuter!
target cherokee leggings vs. crewcuts pixie pants
these pixie pants are one of my most favorite basic item in the girls closet. they are as comfortable as leggings, but much warmer (great for winter) and can be dressed up or down. we tuck them into boots, cuff them up with sneakers and pair them with ballet flats. they come in solid colors, colorblocked, camo, print and even with faux leather panels. their price ranges from $49-$68. they do last for season upon season (we have one pair heading into its third winter) but i was thrilled when i came across this pair of cherokee leggings from target. they are nearly identical, but these have an added zipper detail. they fit just as great and a bonus, come in leopard print. they also have gray and black- the fabric isn't quite as thick or durable, but for under $15 i don't mind! unfortunately they are from the big girl section (size 4-16), although gracie fits great in a size 4 and could even size up to a 5.
zara polka dot top vs. crewcuts polka dot top
i checked out the crewcuts polka dot top in their store last week. it is darling. it made me want to search for a plaid skirt, knee highs and a bow tie- a chic preppy take on a holiday look. plus, under a jumper, under a sweater, over a dress, it would be such a great winter piece. then i came across an identical top from zara kids. it's $20 less and every bit as cute!
mini boden floral skirt vs. dolce&gabbana floral skirt
i spotted this dolce&gabbana floral skirt and wanted to cry. the floral is timeless, the cut is incredible. i mean, this skirt is beautiful...and the $330 price tag is shocking. i found this mini boden floral skirt and was relieved to find that it is $300 less! i love the black floral and all its possibilities. you could pair it with pink tights, knee highs (gracie's most favorite invention) a pea coat, a cardigan, even the crewcuts or zara polka dot top. i'm hoping to snag this for holiday parties! (ps- i made the mistake of checking out all of dolce&gabbana's line for kids...it is just amazing. i'm considering taking in fabric to a seamstress to have some of the looks recreated!)
old navy glitter ankle boots vs. crewcuts shimmer macalister boots
i had been eyeing the crewcuts macalister boots for gracie. over the summer they went on sale, plus they had an additional 40% off all sale items. i snagged them for less than $30. the quality is amazing, the glitter hasn't fallen off through multiple wears either. we've paired them with leggings, denim, skirts and dresses. i can't pick my favorite look! if you're not wanting to wait and watch for a big sale, these old navy glitter ankle boots are a great alternative. i ordered them for maddie and am anxious to see how they hold up compared to the crewcuts version!
old navy graphic sweatshirt vs. peek kids graphic sweatshirt
i am a huge fan of peek kids clothing. i can attest to their durability- my family passes around all their outgrown peek clothes. their denim and dresses are great, but i've been really impressed with their knits- the t-shirts, sweaters and leggings all become softer with each wash and i haven't noticed any significant color fading. i saw this sweatshirt in their store and immediately thought of 8 different outfits to add it to, however, it is just under $50. i came across this sweatshirt at old navy, it is so cute! the high-low hemline adds a new dimension to a sweatshirt and the bold print is right on trend. i'd love it paired with patterned leggings, with a collared shirt underneath or plain old denim jeans.
