we were so excited for matthew’s 10k race on saturday! the girls and i were anxiously awaiting at the finish line. his ankle had been bugging him, so we weren’t sure what to expect. gracie didn’t take her eyes off the finish line, while maddie practiced her running all over the parking lot. as i saw him sprinting to the finish line i got a little teary eyed (or i maybe really did start crying) thinking about how hard he has been working for this. he has diligently been training, waking up most mornings before 6am to head out and run- no matter how tired he is, how cold it is outside or what his day has in store. while he has always been a gifted athlete, i know that a lot of his success has come from his commitment and determination. i am often in awe (and maybe a teeny bit jealous) of his ability to succeed. most of the time without fanfare or acknowledgement. in fact, it is well known in his family, that if it weren’t for me spilling the beans, he would, probably never, let them in on any of his successes. straight a’s in his masters program? big accomplishments with work? acceptances and scholarships to law schools? matthew stays quiet, while i like to group text our whole families and make thrilled phone calls hardly containing my excitement. but it’s just kind of him, and i love him for that. (he will however, remind his brothers of his victories in any of the last 10 family basketball games or beating me in phase 10 5 years ago...because those things are worth bragging about:)
matthew ended the race in 6th place, 2nd in his age group, with an average time of 5:36 per mile. the girls immediately stole his medal.
and the cute nike’s the girls are sporting? matthew found them online and took the girls to pick out which color they wanted, all while telling them that if they worked hard enough, they could do anything they wanted to. somedays it’s soccer, somedays it’s gymnastics or running track in the olympics. he will always be their biggest supporter and their best companion in dreaming, and i couldn’t be more grateful.
//matthew's sister, stephanie, snapped this picture of maddie and her best buddy. i will love it forever//
//i couldn't get her to look at me, she was focused on the finish line//
//matthew and 4 of his 6 sisters. these girls all ran in the race too...they are all amazing!//
